About The Exhibit

Sierra Arts Foundation presents a site-specific installation from local muralist Joe C. Rock. The exhibit runs Feb. 4 – 26, 2016. Meet the artist on Thursday Feb.18, 5-6 p.m. for SAF members and 6-7 p.m. open to the public. Wild River Grille will provide refreshments.

Graffiti art is a term that gained popularity in the early 1980’s New York City, in particular, painted subway cars in the Bronx. This trend continued to grow in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. Artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey have brought new light to what street art can be and have helped change public opinion. Muralists are the new rock stars of the art world.

Reno is home of more than 100 murals, several painted by artists of international acclaim. Joe C. Rock has long been crafting his style throughout the streets and alleyways. This is his first major installation.

The exhibit will be an opportunity to see both sides of Rock’s work. Delicate portraits with subtle imagery juxtaposed with graffiti influenced urban scenes stacked with political commentary. This site-specific installation will transform the atmosphere of the Sierra Arts Gallery into a moment, capturing the high’s and low’s of the artists life on the street.

About The Artist

Rock has been an integral part of the Reno art scene both on the street and in the many galleries around town.  Joe C. Rock’s murals can be seen throughout town, but are heavily clustered in Midtown. Since 2012, Rock has been commissioned by homeowners and businesses to create what has become a walking neighborhood gallery.
