About The Exhibit

Sierra Arts Foundation is proud to present its first exhibition of 2014, “Living in ‘el Norte'”, a collection of works examining the lives of children brought to the U.S. by parents seeking better lives and growing up undocumented by UNR MFA candidate Blanco de San Roman. The exhibition runs January 15 through February 13 with an artist reception on Thursday, January 16 from 5-7pm. Following the reception, a free concert by singer Evan Harris will take place.

The subjects in this series by San Roman represent a “new generation” of undocumented citizens that never chose to cross because of their early age. Their families, in search of prosperity, decided to cross the desert that separates ‘el Norte’ (United States) with Mexico. Few families succeed in getting US Residency, some die along the way, but the majority live among us as illegal citizens raising their families. Through the paintings and recordings of of these personal experiences, San Roman endeavors to bring a personal experience in order to view them as what they are – human immigrants.

About The Artist

Despite his strong artistic desire since childhood, he grew up in Spain competing internationally as a professional tennis player. Through a fully funded athletic scholarship he crossed over the Atlantic to start college in Florida. The experience was unique but tough, especially being Spanish and only understanding a little English. After transferring to a college in California and suffering a shoulder injury his passion and focus landed on painting. His work is realistic in style and allegorical in nature dealing with identities of groups of people through individuals or symbols.
