Arts Alternatives Making An Impact

From Teaching Artist Paris Almond at Turning Point, whose student population includes 3rd-12th grade children-at-risk whose special needs are addressed in a nurturing and structured environment:

“This student is not highly verbal, but he selected this powerful image of the Minotaur from a little book about drawing dragons and other mythical creatures. I feel he was drawn to the strength and power of this creature, holding it in great admiration. He would not let us display it in the hallway, preferring to take it home with him and put it up straight away.

He enlarged it of his on accord, studiously looking at the little image in the book, and working many days to render it practically life-size! He taped pieces of drawing paper together to achieve this scale, and then we laminated it for protection. He’s very proud of it, but it also seems very private for him.

I have since provided him with a large hand-pulled cotton rag paper for his next image, which he has already started. He likes using the Ebony pencils especially.”
