Warm Springs Correctional Gets Art
High praise goes to SAF teaching artist Ray Valdez and his students at Warm Springs Correctional Facility in Carson City for recently completing the first ever art class in the facility!
Ray has spent the last 7 weeks at Warm Springs Correctional Facility in Carson City teaching a class of inmates techniques for drawing with pencil, charcoal, and conté crayon. Warden Smith, in an interview with Sierra Arts, says, “The class builds self-esteem and character. Many of the same benefits and reasons to NOT cut Art in schools apply to the prison.”
He also said that while the first class initially only had a luke-warm reception, word has spread “across the yard” and many inmates can’t wait for the next session to begin.
