New City of Reno Special Event – Riverwalk Crafters

The City of Reno has organized a temporary special event that will allow crafters to set up on the The Riverwalk District this summer during the months of July and August.

The crafters event starts this Wednesday, July 1, 2015 and will run seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Times and days are subject to change, however, depending on demand and previously scheduled special events.

The purpose of the event relates to a decision made on June 10, 2015 by the Reno City Council. Council asked City staff to utilize two or more hours to define artist codes and designate an area to ensure First Amendment compliance. This pilot project will allow staff a sample with which to examine either a revision in current code based on the outcomes of the event or discuss the possibility of a City-sponsored permanent special event on The Riverwalk.

The City of Reno’s goal is to allow creatives who work in the craft arena such as jewelry, wearable art, and functional ceramics to show and sell their original work on The Riverwalk during Artown and beyond.

The crafters will need to obtain a temporary vendor permit for $15 for the season from the Business License Division to be in the event venue, which is first-come-first-served. City staff will mark out at least two dozen locations of the same size for the crafters to locate. The work shown must be original, not mass-produced, and sold by the crafter (not a representative).

The benefits of creating a special event pilot project prior to changing code is that staff will have time to evaluate the program to develop best practices. This project, which supports the Council priority to foster a vibrant downtown for residents and visitors, will allow staff to engage the arts and business community prior to recommending options to the Reno City Council for a more permanent program.
