GATEWAY PROJECT CALL TO ARTISTS

Letter of Interest

About Us: The Gateway Project is a coalition of non-profits and community groups who are raising funds to bring a piece of art from Gary Gunderson to the City of Reno art collection.  Mr. Gunderson is the creator of Trillium. This year’s project will include an auction of 25 bicycle scaled and themed sculptures, community workshops on art bike creation, bike lighting for kids and families, and an evening Art Bike parade. Our partners include the Sierra Arts Foundation, City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, Burning Man Project (when we receive permission to add them to the list), Kiwanis, and the Reno News and Review.

Artwork Overview: We are commissioning 25 pieces of sculpture each made from at least one bicycle and any other materials the artist chooses. These creations should be fun, interactive and celebrate play bike culture. The bike sculptures will be auctioned off to fund the purchase of art.

Design: We will accept freestanding sculpture, two dimensional wall pieces or mobiles and stabiles.

Location: The sculptures will be displayed throughout Reno during ARTOWN. Our corporate sponsors will have the opportunity to display their sponsored pieces in their businesses, and will then be able to bid on them during the Gateway event if they would like to keep the sculptures.

Materials budget: If desired, one bicycle will be provided to each artist for the project or they may acquire a bicycle of their own to work from. Selected artists will receive a fee of $500 and will also receive 10% of the final auction price of their sculpture to cover costs of design, materials, fabrication, finishing, and transportation of the sculpture to Reno. The Gateway Project is responsible for costs associated with installation.
